Most of the industrialised countries as well as the developing ones, have at least one financial index. Indices are crate of stocks which represent the performance and measure the value of the particular stock market sector to which they belong. It may also be referred as a group of stock market publicly listed uppermost businesses within a region.
Each index is determined by the weighted average of the prices of the stocks that comprise it and can be used to indicate the performance of a particular sector or even the economy health of a country.
Indices price movements and volatility are impacted by factors like political events, major factors which affect companies in a particular sector, economic data like employment figures and big changes in the currencies markets.
Below are the most widely followed and the world's largest indices based on the market capitalization of their constituents. The name of the index usually indicates the number of its constituent companies.
